Ford Government Review of Legal Aid and Funding Cuts
The Ontario government is conducting a review of legal aid services: the Legal Aid Modernization Project. We are proud of the service that we provide and welcome the opportunity to work with Legal Aid Ontario and the Ontario government to continue to improve the services provided by community legal clinics. However, we believe that it is essential that legal clinics continue to be governed by local community based boards of directors. If governance is shifted to bureaucrats in Toronto, we will lose a vital connection to the needs of the community and lose the ability to respond nimbly to changing needs. We urge our supporters to contact their local MPP and tell them that community legal clinics need to be governed by local community based boards of directors.
We also continue to remain concerned about funding. If the Ontario government continues with the funding cuts to Legal Aid Ontario planned for next April, services at all legal clinics, including ours, will be reduced. Write to your MPP to tell them that funding for community legal clinics should not be cut!
